You can have any electric car as long as it s made by Volkswagen

Volkswagen has confidently said that it s big electric vehicle sales push has been timed to perfection.

In veritable Volkswagen style, and with the help of some 70,000 employees specifically working on electromobility projects, the company has even put a date on world domination of the EV market: 2018.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show Volkswagen Group CEO Martin Winterkorn said that 40 new models across the Group s brands (including Audi, Porsche and Volkswagen to name but a few) could be fitted with alternative drivetrains by next year if the market demanded it. As it stands, however, we re on course to see 14 models with electric or hybrid drivetrain tech by then. Winterkorn called it the “most comprehensive approach to tomorrow s mobility”.

Choice is crux of Volkswagen s marketing strategy and affordability is high also on the agenda. Volkswagen understands that not everyone will want to spend above the odds for cars such as the e-Golf when it arrives later this year.

“The electric car cannot be a compromise on wheels, it must convince customers in every respect. From the zero emission city car, through the plug-in hybrid all-rounder to the three-litre sport saloon: It is our customers who decide for themselves just how must e-mobility they want” Dr. Martin Winterkorn

So how much e-mobility do you want? The tiny e-up! is the logical place to start, being small, relatively inexpensive and suited perfectly to urban environments (range is 100 miles). At the opposite end of scale, discounting the fairytale 918 Spyder. is the new Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid.

Porsche already reckons that the hybrid option will make up 10 percent of Panamera sales, which isn t surprising given the figures; 416hp and an electric range of 22 miles.

Filling the sizeable hole between these two will be models like the Audi A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid, due next autumn. Thirty-one miles electric range is enough to be useful during routine journeys but a 148hp engine means total range is over 500 miles should you need it. It will cost around 38,000 euros in Europe.

Although it has arrived late to the electric car game – Nissan launched the LEAF in 2010 – Volkswagen Group has the strength of its brands to rely on. Audi, Volkswagen, Porsche: desirable brands associated with quality, which is why we shouldn t be too surprised if Audi manage to shift quite a few A3 e-trons at that price.

Renault-Nissan recently sold it s 100,000 th electric vehicle after three years. How long will it take Volkswagen?
