The Volvo V60 PHEV (plug-in will not be coming to South because our electricity is still too — meaning that cars still do more than an efficient diesel. Our UK Jamie Merrill tells us we’re missing.

The marketing for the new Volvo V60 estate reads to pure Volvo”. My Volvo-loving James won’t be impressed, He had a second-hand 1990s Volvo 740 with two rear-facing seats the fun you used to have in those?) when we were at university. He was the in a band that played metal in fancy dress and he his chunky wagon to cart his around.

It was, he claimed, the perfect car for a band.

James will hope that its new slogan the Swedish firm (now is to return to its roots of making estates that carry of stuff. James, you see, is a purist who thinks the firm its way under Ford (the owner) by producing dubiously estates. That’s why he likes to on purpose confuse modern with tiny Korean cars — the sort of car is unsuitable for carrying drum

Sadly for James, the firm going backwards but has instead electric power. It shouldn’t be a surprise; Volvo has always a technological trail. It introduced the easy-fit seatbelt in 1959 and the first airbag in 1994, last year it demonstrated the first pedestrian airbag.

Enter the new V60 Plug-In Hybrid. a standard V60 estate — pretty coupe-like styling by old Volvo standards, a limited — with the nifty of a 51kW electric motor and to drive the rear wheels.

TRIUMPH

Cruising around is where it comes into its running smoothly on electric

My drummer friend might not with its proportions, but it’s a of engineering. Unlike most it can be plugged in to the mains to receive a charge and can travel up to 50km in mode. It will run electrically up to and only call the diesel into play when right foot demands power.

It means if you subscribe to a renewable tariff and mostly make trips, you can go long periods of without visiting the pumps or tailpipe nasties.

It’s one of the cars of the year and I managed 5.6 per 100km without too much over a mixture of roads. But cruising around town it comes into its own, smoothly on electric power. A side effect of all this is that with the diesel and motor combined in Power this is a very fast

Is this a car for all occasions then? Not It only really makes sense if you do lots of short and only need the diesel for the rare long trip.

And are other downsides — the gubbins add 250kg to the car and this has cut the space by 160 litres from the model (barely room for a drum let alone a set of cymbals).

Volvo V60 PHEV

All the weight means the V60 bumps the smallest imperfections on the road, is efficient at motorway speed and can heavy in fast bends.

The biggest drawback is still the though. The top-spec diesel without the hybrid technology is a full £6000 (R84 cheaper in the UK. Hence why Volvo sell hundreds of these but those who do buy one will have a green car on their driveways.

And one entirely conventional to drive and with. For those few early that’s something they happily pay for, unless are drummers that is.
