Volvo presents the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid — the V60 — a new breed of hybrid

Volvo underlines its sustainable ambitions at the Geneva Motor Show

Geneva, Tuesday 1 March 2011 Volvo will be unveiling its Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid — the world’s first hybrid car of its kind — which is set to revolutionise the world of motoring. The Plug-in Hybrid, which will be in show rooms by 2012, is the result of a partnership between Volvo Cars and Swedish energy supplier Vattenfall.

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid has all the traditional properties of a genuine sports wagon, with the benefits of Volvo’s new technology that allows the driver to choose from different driving modes at the touch of a button: electric-only, zero emissions (Pure), high efficiency diesel -electric hybrid (Hybrid) or full-on performance and power driven by the electric motor and the diesel engine simultaneously (Power). Hot on the heels of the C30 full electric car, unveiled in 2010, the launch of the V60 Plug-In Hybrid further demonstrates Volvo’s commitment to sustainable motoring.

At Volvo it is our mission to develop carbon-dioxide lean cars to contribute to a sustainable future. Volvo Cars has introduced groundbreaking green -tech before and with our latest development, the V60 Plug-in Hybrid, we are once again demonstrating our leadership in the environment field. This second-generation hybrid is the perfect choice for the uncompromising buyer who wants a superb carbon dioxide-lean car packed with driving pleasure says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.

Electric and hybrid cars look set to transform the automotive industry; with industry forecasts suggesting that, by 2020, approximately 10% of new cars will be either entirely battery driven vehicles or plug-in hybrids .

Three cars in one

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid integrates the very best properties from three different car types into a single sports wagon. An electric car with a range of up to 50km; a hybrid with carbon dioxide emissions averaging just 49g/km NEDC and a performance car — the diesel engine and electric motor offer a combined output of 215 + 70 horsepower, 440 + 200 Nm of torque and acceleration from 0 to 100km/h of just 6.9 seconds.

Recharging at home

The V60 can be recharged via a regular power socket at home or when parked somewhere else. The battery takes approximately 5 hours to recharge and has a range of 50km on pure electric power.

Driving pleasure and special features

The Volvo V60 offers the same excellent driving dynamics, comfort and world-class safety status as a normal Volvo model. The Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid features a special satin white paint supplied by Dupont and the interior includes unique features such as leather upholstery from Elmo. Several additional features have been added to emphasise the car’s carbon dioxide-lean profile such as lightweight wheels, Pirelli tyres designed for low rolling resistance and a modified instrument panel including important information about diesel and electricity consumption, battery charge level and remaining range.

Cheaper fuel costs

Fuel costs will be one-third compared with a conventional combustion engine. Pure electric power from the battery will cover the daily transport needs of 75% of European drivers. For longer distances, an efficient diesel hybrid engine automatically takes over, with the combined range of up to 1200km.

Carbon dioxide emissions will average out at 49 grams per km, with fuel consumption of 1.9 litres per 100km NEDC.

The benefits of electric power

VOLVO V60 Plug-In Hybrid

Electricity is highly suited as a car fuel, with electric motors having a high efficiency rating and consuming around one fifth as much energy as a corresponding engine running on fossil fuel. Volvo’s plug-in hybrid car will also be propelled by a lithium-ion battery, with additional electricity generated every time the car brakes. When running on the battery, emissions from the exhaust pipe will be non-existent.

If the battery is recharged using electricity from renewable sources, the net emission of CO2 will be close to zero, even in a lifecycle perspective. In its domestic markets, Vattenfall will offer buyers of the plug-in hybrid 100% renewable electricity.

The technology is still undergoing development and testing but this model gives a clear indication of what customers can expect when the plug-in hybrid enters showrooms next year. Volvo is once again demonstrating its leadership in the environmental field by being the first to market hybrid technology in an entirely new dimension.
