Wagon May Make its Way West

which showed us a prototype of its hybrid wagon in Sweden 16 months ago, is unveiling the version at the 2011 Geneva Show in March.

It s a V60 sport like the one pictured above, but a 2.4-liter, 5-cylinder, 215-horsepower driving the front wheels a six-speed automatic and a 70 horsepower motor driving the rear

Volvo says it is capable of in front-wheel, all-wheel or rear-wheel modes at various times and its rechargeable 12 kilowatt-hour lithium pack from Indiana s can deliver up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) of range.

Here s what we after we first saw a prototype in in the fall of 2009, built on the now V70 wagon:

The plug-in hybrid, or PHEV, uses Volvo s 5-cylinder diesel to drive the front with a 50 kilowatt (70 horsepower) motor powering the rear and augmenting the diesel when power is needed for acceleration.

The s EnerDel batteries are flat-pack ion cells bundled into a 12 pack, with 8 kilowatt of usable energy — a loop around Volvo s today showed, to boost the to nearly 60 miles an hour on drive.

We weren t able to test the car to its but Volvo PHEV program Henrik Jarlebratt told us the is designed to provide up to 35 miles of drive — although not at a 60 mpg but under the more leisurely combined driving cycle includes 4 kilometers of city and 7 kilometers of highway speeds.

says the system will up to 280 combined diesel and electric when needed, with 713 of range on diesel fuel to the 35 miles of all-electric range for of almost 750 miles on one battery and a full tank of diesel .

No word yet on where all the V60 PHEV be sold, and until recently we d said that it definitely t intended for the U.S. — the V60 diesel wagon isn t slated for here and Volvo, like automakers, doesn t consider the to be a decent diesel market Mercedes-Benz ongoing diesel and the great success Volkswagen and have had with their here.)

So, why are we telling you about it? Well, we bringing you stories of these electric-drive cars in hopes the will prod people to the automakers that they can them here. Besides, CEO Stefan Jacoby has said there just might be a in the U.S. eco-enthusiast niche for at least a few of the V60 PHEVs.
