Volvo to Unveil Diesel-Electric V60 Plug-In Hybrid at Geneva Auto Show [UPDATED]

Volvo has announced that it will unveil a “virtually production-ready” diesel-electric plug-in hybrid version of the V60 wagon at the Geneva auto show. and the company has has confirmed it will be offered for sale in European markets beginning sometime in 2012. The hybrid system is befitting of the car’s complicated description, and represents a new approach compared with current production hybrid setups.

The wagon—which isn’t available in the U.S. in any form—uses a 215-hp, 325-lb-ft five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine to power the front wheels, while a 70-hp, 148-lb-ft electric motor mounted out back drives the rears. A 12-kWh battery pack stores the electrical energy. The two propulsion systems can work together or separately. Drivers select one of three driving modes with the default being “Hybrid”, in which the two power sources work together to deliver a suitable balance between conventional (read: non-eco-weenie) driving behavior and low fuel consumption.

The “Pure” mode allows the vehicle to run solely on electricity if conditions allow, while the “Power” mode again teams both engine and electric motor, but this time aiming strictly for performance. In this latter mode, Volvo says the car is capable of achieving a 0-to-62-mph time of 6.9 seconds.

What this means, of course, is that when the car is operating in the “Pure” EV mode, it will be rear-wheel drive. Volvo states that fully charging from a 230-volt outlet—the standard in Europe—will take about 7.5 hours, although a more powerful circuit will obviously cut the time. The V60 plug-in hybrid has a stated maximum range of 746 miles, and it can cover “up to” 31 miles on electricity alone. Efficiency is pegged at 124 MPGe; check out our decoding of MPGe and how the EPA is using the number here .

The wagon also will feature low-rolling-resistance Pirelli tires and unique gauges monitoring the range and battery level. Like most other high-tech cars these days, a mobile-phone application will allow the HVAC system to be operated remotely, and it will also alert owners when the car wants to be plugged in, among other functions.

While we know we definitely won’t be getting the V60 plug-in, Volvo told us that the system would directly carry-over to its XC60 crossover, which is of course available in the States. It would also of course work in the sedan on which the wagon is based—the S60, which also is sold here—so there’s still a chance we could see this system made available to American consumers.
