Tokyo Motor Show Meet the Motiv-e, Yamaha s EV

Japanese manufacturer Yamaha is for its vast range of motorcycles, equipment, audio equipment and musical instruments. But the Motiv-e vehicle, unveiled today at the Tokyo Motor Show in hints that Yamaha is to move into four-wheeled EV with the help of an unusual South African car designer Murray.

The Yamaha Motiv-e to rival the Smart ForTwo if it production.

From his time Grand Prix winning at Lotus in the heyday of Formula One to his at McLaren which famously to the development of the road-going McLaren F1 and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Murray t been one to stick to the status Yet until recently, Murray t someone you d  necessarily  associate fuel efficient cars.

Yet for the past six years, Murray has run his own consultancy, working on redesigning and the city car with two futuristic, three-seat city microcars: the T.25 and the all-electric T.27. primarily to highlight Murray s production technology which on an F1-inspired safety structure to all the mechanical components are fitted being surrounded by flexible, body panels the T.25 and are ultra-fuel efficient, microcars to use as little energy as possible their production, life on the and be eminently recyclable at the end of their lives.

But with a single, hinging door and central seat flanked by two passenger offset to the rear, the T.25 and were anything but conventional. with the help of Gordon Design, has embodied the essence of the manufacturing and made it more to mainstream buyers.

The results are the Motiv and Motiv-e cars.

Based on the same as the original T.25 and T.27, the Motiv has been designed for European buyers, and features two not seats, all-round independent and a choice of electric or petrol both rear-wheel drive.

Murray s patented iStream technology, the chassis is built from tubular steel, the major mechanical components fitted directly to it in order to the required rigidity and support. The car s made of a composite sandwich is then bonded in and super-strong yet composite pre-painted body make up the car s exterior.

Inside, two lightweight composite provide seating for driver and while the cockpit is furnished a single display in front of the and an elegant, uncluttered dashboard.

The is clean and simple

Although position has been moved the centre of the car to a more conventional or left-handed position, the Motiv and should handle reasonably to the original T.25 and T.27 cars Murray produced to the iStream manufacturing process, Yamaha has used a near chassis layout. Specifications yet to be confirmed, but the gasoline Motiv is to produce between 70 and 80 horsepower a small 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine, while the all-electric is expected to use a similar Zytec to the all-electric T.27.

That equates to a total output somewhere around 25 and a 65 mph top speed which, while it may not much, should give the an impressive round-town range if it reaches production since the vehicle is expected to weigh 730 kilograms, much lighter the Smart ForTwo Electric

Talking of its closest potential the Motiv is 50 mm narrower and 60 mm lower the current Smart ForTwo, but exactly the same length. the next generation Smart is predicted to be even larger the current generation, Yamaha be in a great position to nab the small car if the Motiv and Motiv-e ever production.

And that s the big challenge now. the Motiv and Motiv-e look production ready for a concept Yamaha s board hasn t yet convinced that making a car is a smart move. However, if the at Yamaha agree by the end of the year, it s say inside sources, that could be making the Motiv and for European buyers by 2016.

you buy a small, ultra-lightweight city Or would you worry its power and range would just be too
